I love fire 🔥 Whether it’s stoking the flames in a fireplace or sitting by a campfire, lighting candles to set a mood or using blow torches to finish my sculptures, there’s just something about an open flame that mystifies me. I won’t wash my clothes after camping in order to hold on to the smoky smell for as long as possible, a souvenir of magical moments shared with friends. The house I grew up in only had a wood stove as its only source of heat. Whoever woke up first in the morning was responsible for building the fire that warmed the house. I remember many lazy mornings, painfully waiting to get up to relieve myself until I could hear someone else moving around the house and I knew I was safe from the responsibility. My brother and I would often work for our step dad who used to cut and deliver firewood. We would load it into his giant red diesel truck, unload it and stack it up for the people he sold it to. Sometimes we could cut kindling using hatchets. Staying warm was something we had to work at during the winters in Oregon. In Texas there are only a few months when the weather is cool enough at night to have a fire. We are rapidly approaching the end of the tolerable season.
